Using the Media Server

USM Computing maintains a server for storing large files, typically media files, and making them available for read access via the Internet.  Storing files on the media server requires an account, which may be requested by emailing the USM Computing Helpdesk at helpdesk@usm.maine.edu.

USM Computing recommends FileZilla (or another file transfer program) that has SFTP or SCP capability (encryption) to upload files. Please see FTP Access to Non-CMS Web Sites using FileZilla for detailed file transfer instructions. Connect to:media.usm.maine.edu, and login with your USM Novell/GroupWise userid and password. Upload files to the public_html directory.

Once you have uploaded your content, use a LINK to the content inside Blackboard, or wherever you are publishing your web pages. When you publish your URLs, they should begin with: http://media.usm.maine.edu/~userid/ For example, a file called lecture.mp4 in your "public_html" directory would be:

http://media.usm.maine.edu/~(youruserid)/lecture.mp4

For assistance, please contact the USM HelpDesk at x4029, or by emailing helpdesk@usm.maine.edu
