How do I access my usm email from a 3rd party host, such as Road Runner or other non-university ISP?

Go to the web site to access directions for using a third party. www.usm.maine.edu/uct/modems/usmmail.htm and click on "SMTP Host: on campus users, University modem pool users, third party ISP users" for instructions on how to set up your smtp host.

As you may be aware, unsolicited bulk e-mail (known as SPAM) on the Internet is a significant problem. Many of these bulk e-mailers make use of someone else's computer systems to relay (send) their mail. This clogs up the mail servers and the Internet network. The problem has grown to such an extent that many systems will block ALL incoming mail from sites that allow mail from outside their system. Therefore, the University has been forced to accept mail for delivery only from users on campus or dialing into a University owned modem pool. Users of a third party Internet Service Provider(ISP)(such as Time Warner Road Runner service or some other dial up Internet Service Provider) must use the SMTP Host of their ISP. In that case, the POP3 host and SMTP host will be different. USM Road Runner users should use SMTP-Server.maine.rr.com as their SMTP Host. Others will have to contact their ISP to obtain the proper value for the SMTP Host.
