Aquaculture in the Northeastern United States is a diverse industry raising finfish, shellfish, and aquatic plants utilizing a myriad of culture techniques and habitats. Northeastern aquaculture produces more than $ 100 million annually in farmgate value while supported by research efforts housed in private and public institutions. The Northeast Region Aquaculture Research Facilities Database (2nd edition) is intended as a tool to illustrate the depth and breath of aquaculture research in the region, expand the access, and facilitate the development of industry: research relationships.

The updated Directory includes submissions from private, public and non-profit research facilities including Federal, State, Local, University (public and private), NGO, Private-for-Profit and Private-Not-for-Profit organizations. A total of 475 survey requests were distributed and presently the guide has 120 researchers (25%) from 99 facilities listed. Nearly 58% (274) of the respondents are not currently involved in aquaculture research, 17% (81) have not responded.

This guide is intended as a tool for:

Industry
bridge gap between commercial and research interests through the development of partnerships and initiatives via the use of research technology, capacity and facilities;
Government
coordination of research capacity, efficient and balanced use of resources through the support of equipment and research focus;
Research
identification of potential research collaborations and shared technology and equipment utilization;
Students
identification of potential graduate study opportunities, internship, assistantship and career potentialities; and
General Public
increased awareness of aquaculture research opportunities, facilities and accomplishments.

Information within this directory reveals the research capacity of the Northeastern Region by species, culture system, geographical location, biosecurity level, instrumentation capacity and availability, Institution, and researcher.

The interactive website is capable of continuous updating and revision, therefore, if any omissions, corrections or deletions are appropriate please contact the authors at ilevine@usm.maine.edu or submit a new data record directly to the website. The Research Facilities Database project was supported by the USDA’s Northeastern Regional Aquaculture Center contract # NSN 60155 with additional resources provided by the University of Southern Maine.
